Would you like to firstly introduce yourself?
  • We are the two developers from Kingdoms Collide team.
What is Kingdoms Collide?
  • Kingdoms Collide is a fantasy themed multiplayer combat game, built on the Source engine, as a mod of Half-life 2. Free to play for anyone who owns Half-Life 2.
You plan to release a first public version of your mod soon. How long have you worked on it What challenges where you confronted with during the development?
  • We started work on the MOD just over a year ago, although before then we had been working on other builds of kingdoms collide (that we hope no one ever sees) for a long time. We originally started the idea about 5 years ago, the lively and creative community revolving around creating MODs for half-life was really inspirational. We decided that, if these people where able to make games of their own ideas, we would too. As we would go along building the mod we would always reach a blocking point in development, some technical difficulty that was too great for us to move past at our current level of competency. So we have completely scrapped the game and started again about three times now, because as we where developing the game we were also rapidly developing our skills, so eventually, all the work we had done looked like rubbish to us and ultimately discouraged us from working further.

In terms of some challenges we have faced specifically within the Kingdoms Collide that you will play; we were plagued with them in the first few month of development. We didn’t know it at the time, by the source engine, I think, has to be one of the most complex engines to MOD within, particularly when trying to create something that is so far removed from the games which is was intended to support (half-life 2, counter-strike: source etc.)

Specifically, we could say our greatest challenges have been; getting player animations to play and blend properly, coding a melee system that is relatively bug free and, above all, finding time for developing the mod between work and university studies.
There already exists a very famous medieval-modification in form of Age of Chivalry. It features close combat with many different weapons and it is even hosted on steam. Why players should play Kingdoms Collide instead? Do you think your mod can stand the competition?
  • Age of Chivalry has existed for the entire time we have been developing Kingdoms Collide, so it has never unmotivated us from working. This is because we don’t really see it as ‘competition’. Rather, we think that, despite having close combat etc, Kingdoms Collide is another game entirely. One main difference is in the art direction and overall theme; where AoC is a more realistic/ historical medieval style, KC is within a fantasy medieval setting, players can use spells/magic etc. Aside from looking very different, involving magic within the gameplay creates much more interesting and diverse battles. Not only do we have an array of skills and magic for players to use to enhance the combat, we have put a lot of work we’ve put into our core melee gameplay try and make something that is different to other multiplayer close combat games out there (as well as more fun).
Where did you get the inspiration for such a rather unorthodox modification? Did you have another mod or game in mind?
  • Well the concept was first born as a messy and confused combination of
many different aspects of games that we liked. We where both hardcore counter-strike players but also had a strong interest in medieval or other close combat fighting (like we had experienced in games such as Jedi Knight, Fable, Ninja Gaiden, Lord of the Rings and Conquer Online). Playing these close combat games however we found that we could never have that same level of player vs player as we had in counter-strike within these close combat games. Everything was always dramatically simplistic; eg. “Press A for a small hit, B for a big hit”. So Kingdoms Collide was born when we endeavored to bring a counterstrike level of skill based multiplayer competition into a game that looked like a fantasy adventure RPG.
